Seattle Steam Boiler
10/16/2008
Seattle Steam Company, a utility which supplies heat to 9 million square feet – about half of the office space in downtown Seattle—chose to replace their main gas- fired boiler with one capable of burning recycled waste wood. This will help them reduce fuel costs, along with providing heat from a renewable resource. FSi was hired to design the piping system modifications for the plant, including major steam, boiler feedwater, and supplemental gas systems. One challenge of the project was to route the wood and ash piping to the plant through a tunnel under Western Avenue from the fuel storage facility across the street. The $25 million project will result in an annual reduction in 50,000 metric tons of carbon released into the atmosphere, making it a major piece of Seattle’s effort to reduce carbon emissions by 600,000 tons annually.
