Other DOD Projects

Details about a few other projects.

  • Renovate Maintenance and Repair Shops at McChord Air Force Base FSi provided the mechanical design for the renovation and relocation of the jet engine maintenance and repair shops in this existing 25,000 square foot building. HVAC design work included new heating and ventilating systems for offices and conference rooms, new make-up air units for chemical use areas, extensions of existing steam and condensate piping to serve new units, DX split system air-conditioning system for computer room, and DDC control system for all new equipment with tie-in to existing base remote monitoring system. FSi field verified and as-built existing heating, ventilation, piping and plumbing systems for AUTOCAD drawing files. Plumbing/piping design included new plumbing and fixtures for remodel of men’s and women’s restrooms, extension of existing hot and cold water utilities, and the extension of existing compressed air system to serve new and relocated equipment. Fire protection design involved modification of existing wet sprinkler system to reflect new layouts and hazard levels of renovated spaces. Also included in fire protection design was the installation of reduced pressure backflow preventers in two existing fire riser stations and two fire valve houses to replace existing double check valve assemblies.
  • Puget Sound Naval Shipyard KNIK/K&K Barracks Barge FSi, as a sub-consultant to a Naval Architecture firm, participated in preparing a design-build proposal to the U. S. Navy for a floating barracks barge. The mechanical systems included heating, ventilating, air conditioning and piping for a barge housing personnel. The mechanical systems included protection against sea spray by inclusion of fiber reinforced plastic and stainless steel components.
  • United States Navy Radio Station Jim Creek, Rehabilitation Building 3 & 4 FSi provided analysis, design and construction support for the renovation of this Naval outdoor recreational area. The renovation of Building 3 converted partially-abandoned berthing/office areas to provide a fully functioning lodge-style berthing/cafeteria building. The renovation of Building 4 converted an abandoned bowling alley into a reception/sport shop building for the guests. The design included intensive energy, life/safety and kitchen studies to determine the most cost effective use of mechanical/electrical systems. The systems included hydronic heating, ventilation, plumbing, piping, fire protection, fire alarm, electrical power, lighting and communication.
  • Tacoma Naval Reserve Station FSi developed the mechanical and electrical portions of a detailed Request for Proposals for the provision of a new building and for remodel to an existing building at this Naval Reserve site. The detailed Request was used to solicit proposals from design/build contractors and/or partnered companies interested in providing a turn-key installation of office space, vehicle maintenance shop and lecture hall. The Request included Design/Build contractor requirements, as well as detailed system specifications and requirements. The systems include heating, ventilation and air conditioning; vehicle exhaust, plumbing and piping; fire protection, fire alarm, electrical power, lighting and communication.
  • McChord Air Force Base Bldg 852 Fire Protection FSi provided the design for the removal of three (3) existing halon systems and the addition of 55,000 square feet of preaction system sprinkler coverage in Building 852, a three-story building at McChord Air Force Base. The design involved coordination of special phasing of the halon removal and new system installation in a limited access, high tech area to eliminate any downtime of computers for air traffic monitoring critical to entire West Coast operations. The project is part of an indefinite quantity contract.
  • Relocate Naval Shipyard Pattern Shop The mechanical systems included a 24,000 cfm sawdust collector and associated collection system, heating, ventilation, DDC (electronic controls) system, plumbing compressed air and fire protection. The electrical systems included power distribution, lighting and fire alarm systems. Additional work under this contract included heating, ventilation, DDC system, fire protection, and lighting for an existing paint and wood shop. FSi also designed the new wet sprinkler system and new fire service additions to three buildings. Special considerations were made for the sawdust collection system and fire alarm connections to the existing baseloop.
