Other State Government Projects
Details about additional projects.
- UW Mechanical Engineering Building Fire Protection Design This project provided fire protection coverage for the entire 35,000 sf of the basement and ground floors of the Mechanical Engineering Building (MEB), and part of the Engineering Annex Building. Wet sprinklers serve most most areas, with a dry sprinkler system serving the electrical transformer vault. FSi evaluated the adequacy of existing fire water service to the building, designed a new service, evaluated of the feasibility of connecting the existing dry standpipe to the wet system, and subsequently designed the connection, and the new dry standpipe. The scope was expanded to include designing a replacement water-cooled chiller in the basement of the MEB with a rooftop air-cooled chiller. FSi provided design for the demolition of an existing 40-ton city water-cooled chiller and pumps, and the addition of two new 40-ton roof top air-cooled chillers and pumps, the second for future expansion. The design included a new chilled water distribution piping system with floor valves for future chilled water tees to serve each floor. Fan coils served by the existing chiller were repiped to the new piping distribution system and balancing valves and three-way valves were added to the existing piping as required. FSi assisted the University in calculating water savings and procuring rebates from the Seattle Public Utilities Water Smart Technology program.
- Temple of Justice Temperature Control Improvements FSi interviewed maintenance personnel, visited the site, and reviewed as-built drawings to determine the causes of the chronic over-heating/over-cooling in this building that was renovated less than 10 years ago. FSi prepared a report that outlined potential corrections to the mechanical systems, estimated the construction costs, and gave recommendations for action.
- Alaska Street Building The Washington State Services for the Blind Alaska Street Building, a 15,000 sq. foot facility, underwent two phases of renovation. The first phase replaced an existing chiller and evaporative condensor located in the boiler room, with a new exterior air-cooled chiller. FSi provided detailed design for the installation of the underground chilled water piping and chiller. FSi acted as Washington State’s representative during construction. The second phase of work was a $1.2 million project providing major mechanical upgrades including a new boiler, multi-zone triple deck air handler, fans, pumps, DDC controls and a fire sprinkler system. The existing wood shop dust collector was replaced with a higher flow return air system with explosion vent and spark detection system.
