King County Housing Authority Greenbridge Community

Greenbridge Hope VI Housing

FSi consulting engineers provided mechanical, plumbing and fire protection engineering services on this revitalization project.

This ambitious project replaced 569 World War II-era single-story duplex public housing units and several support buildings on the existing 90-acre White Center site, with 900 new units of housing. The new diverse neighborhood community follows an urban design plan rooted in principles of New Urbanism and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design.

The project includes 300 very low-income rental homes, 200 “workforce” homes (tax-credit rental homes for those families earning 50% to 60% of median area income), and 400 homes for sale to first-time and market-rate homebuyers.

The project was made possible by a HUD Hope VI grant to the King County Housing Authority. Special efforts have been made to preserve existing stands of heritage trees, integrate a resident relocation plan and an interim infrastructure plan with project phasing, and address the realities of grading, traffic, drainage, utilities and right-of-way design into the proposed, reconnected street grid.

The project received numerous awards, including:

  • 2009 ACEC Engineering Excellence Silver Award in the Complexity category
  • 2010 MBA Built Green Hammer Award in the Built Green Large Community category
  • 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2010 Certificates of Merit BUILT GREEN 3-Star Ratings
