USPS Computer Room Cooling Study & Report The room houses a great deal of the Postal Services networked computers for the area and has been experiencing high space temperatures and failures of the cooling units as the computer network expands. FSi’s report recommended replacement of the cooling units with newer, larger units that take advantage of the “free cooling” feature now offered with these types of units. The report also recommended that the room’s exiting Halon fire protection system be replaced with either a pre-action or an Intergen gas system during the construction. Including this Halon removal while the cooling unit replacement work takes place will remove the threat of a release of Halon gas that is harmful to the environment.

Monroe Post Office Air Conditioning Study FSi was hired to do a study on the existing HVAC system that served the Monroe Post Office. Surveyed the site and checked if the existing gas-fired furnaces have enough capacity and adequate space for installation of a new cooling coil. FSi also provided a summary report and cost estimate.

HVAC Modifications to the Monroe Post Office FSi provided the mechanical and electrical design to add air conditioning and revise the heating and ventilation system in this existing post office. FSi carefully coordinated the added electrical load for air conditioning with the local public utility.

Ellensburg Post Office HVAC System Replacement FSi’s original scope on this project was to replace the rooftop air conditioning units on this office and large workroom building. While investigating complaints of cold indoor temperatures during the winter, FSi discovered an unused heating and ventilation system. FSi’s subsequent report on the findings prompted expansion of the scope to recommissioning the existing heat and vent system and adding a temperature control system to integrate the heat and vent system with the rooftop air conditioning system. The newly integrated systems will provide the Postal Service with increased year-round comfort and lower energy costs.

Design Criteria and Construction Review for Eugene P&DC FSi provided mechanical and electrical support to help prepare the Design Criteria for the design/build expansion of this existing mail processing and distribution center. This was one of the first projects the US Postal Service has constructed using a design/build approach, making this project a prototype of future efforts. The project virtually doubled the size of the existing 87,000 SF facility to 158,000 SF. FSi also supported the project during final design and construction with review of the calculations, equipment sizing/selection, and with visits to the construction site.

Purchase and Remodel of the USPS Seattle Processing and Distribution Center FSi acted as the USPS Owner’s Representative on the mechanical systems as the USPS negotiated the purchase and remodel of this 563,000 square foot facility from The Boeing Company. The $47 million contract price included site improvements plus turn key improvements to the infrastructure. In the process, the two former Boeing Defense Manufacturing buildings were combined into the single largest state-of-the-art mail processing and distribution center on the West Coast. The project was completed within schedule and produced over $1 million project cost savings to the USPS.
