Other K-12 Education Projects
Details about a few other projects.
- Denny Middle School and Salmon Bay Elementary Water Piping Replacement FSi provided the design and construction services for the replacement of fixtures and piping to improve the water quality at this 125,000 SF middle school and 117,000 SF alternative elementary school. FSi helped the client choose cost effective methods to resolve the system issues through extensive discussions and evaluation of costs, benefits and life expectancy. Partial pipe and fixture replacement along with the addition of filters will provide an acceptable system for the buildings until their planned renovation in five to six years.
- Mary Lyon Elementary Indoor Air Quality Improvements FSi, as the prime consultant, provided the mechanical design and project management for the Mary Lyon Improvement project. Our scope of services included upgrading ventilation in this 13-room, 350 students, K-6 school. The decision to select FSi for the project, rather than the other engineering firms under consideration, was based largely on FSi’s creative solution to the difficult issue of indoor air quality in an existing building. The design provided 100% outdoor ventilation air using a new central air handler with an air-to-air heat exchanger to decrease energy consumption. The central air system concept allowed the noise-producing elements to be located remotely in the attic, which eliminated the need to cut louvered openings in the brick facade of this classic 1924 building. The design also met the School District’s goal of converting the building heat from a steam to hot water system.
- Remann Hall Air Conditioning Installation FSi provided the design of a new HVAC system for the classrooms at Pierce County’s court juvenile and detention facility. This secure facility operates 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. Working closely with the owners and being flexible enable us to develop a schedule that would meet the necessary deadlines. The scope of work consisted of a new HVAC for the educational wing classrooms in Building C. The ceilings in this building are relatively high therefore, FSi designed a system that used rooftop heat pumps, which were ducted to the attic and included electric auxiliary heating. FSi also performed the site field investigation, design drawings and specifications.
- Wing Luke Elementary Classroom and Gymnasium Addition FSi provided the fire protection design for this addition to Wing Luke Elementary in Seattle. Our analysis showed that the addition of the 3,000 sf gymnasium and 18,000 sf of classroom and office space would require a new fire service and sprinkler valve and riser assembly. In providing the design of the new system, FSi worked closely with architect to define the routing of the sprinkler system so that it would work with the aesthetics of the new construction.
- Washington Elementary Office and Admin Air Conditioning FSi was asked by the school district to provide air conditioning in the office and administrative area of this 1900’s 330-student elementary school. No other areas of the school are conditioned, so the design used a rooftop self-contained air conditioning unit. The work needed to take into consideration the age of the building, visibility of the unit, location of existing intake louvers and limited accessible roof area. FSi’s mechanical design was contractor bid, with the remainder of the work being performed by the school district’s own staffs.
